Replacing Launchy with Windows Vista's Start Menu

image I was addicted to Launchy back on my old Dell latitude D420. It had Windows XP with Launchy. I went through documents in a snap making most of my friends impressed. Anything I could think of, a program or even a document, was exactly 1 second away from the moment I needed it.

Now with my HP Pavilion dv2775ee with Vista Home Premium 64, I wanted the same functionality. I knew about it's "Search" capability in launching applications. But I wanted to open pdf ebooks, documents..etc in the same manner.More...

Google Egypt searching problems

image I am having a very lame problem with Google Egypt's search engine. Results returned are only "pages from Egypt" whenever I change what I am searching for.

Do the following steps with me to see for yourself.

1-Open the Google Egypt.

2-Search for anything: "office 2007". The results are what is expected

 Searching google

3-Now change the search terms to "office 2007 download" and BOOOM. searching google. ERROR

Problem:

Notice the checkbox was set to "pages from Egypt" though we didn't specify it. Change it back to "the web" and hit "Search" again...yes it's STUCK!! You can't change it.

Analyzing the problem:

If you look closely at the querystring, notice that there are 2 repeated name/values.

http://www.google.com.eg/search?
hl=en&q=office+2007&btnG=Google+Search&meta=#
hl=en&q=office+2007+download&btnG=Search&meta=&meta=cr%3DcountryEG&nochrome=1

This needs to be fixed right away because I am pretty sure that most people won't notice that any consecutive searches are returning a subset of the whole results.

Google people, please solve this matter ASAP!

Battle of the browsers: The Javascript Engine Challenge

My good friend Hatham El-Fadeel pointed me to a post that states how good is the performance of the latest beta of Firefox 3 is compared to other web browsers and to even the previous beta of Firefox 3.

I though to jump right in and take the same test using my laptop as a test bed. An HP dv2775ee Core 2 Duo 2.5GHz 6MB Cache (T9300) with 4GB RAM on a Vista Home Premium 64 Bit

WOW!! The Firefox team is doing magical stuff to their engine leaving both Opera and IE teams with some serious competition....the closest match is IE8 and it's 2x slower!!

Update: Coding horror has covered this a long time ago, in a much detailed way.

Pirate Bay moves to Sinai, Egypt

Pirate Bay moves to Egypt as per their blog post in an attempt to escape for the new European law. Looks like another April fool like Google Australia's gDay to me, but it's hilarious nonetheless!!

Egypt wins Africa Cup of Nations 2008

Our team were men of steel. They played with honor and strength. They deserved to win. They fought with one target: "the cup is ours".

They played and showed what it means for a nation to be united. The streets were totally EMPTY. Everyone was at home. When we scored, you could hear the sound echoing buildings and buildings away!!

Seeing the players play filled us with pride. They fought and spent every ounce of energy they had.

Celebrations are occurring as I write this everywhere on the planet.

-In Egypt: Cairo, Helwan, Port Said, Alex..EVERYWHERE!!
-In the Arab World: Syria, Suadia Arabia, Qatar...
-In Europe: Paris, Madrid,...
-In Australia:  Sydney...
-In America: New York..
-In Canada: Montreal...

Truly, if I weren't born an Egyptian, I wish I were Egyptian.

Alhamdo lillah...

About Me

AA. I am Mohamed Salem Korayem. I work as an Embedded Software Engineer in a major international automotive supplier company here in Cairo, Egypt.

Currently I work in the Tooling Dept. where I, and the rest of the team, strive to make our fellow embedded software geeks happier. I work mainly with the .NET 2.0 using C#.

I also have a big appetite for web-development. I like analyzing the revolution of the web (aka Web 2.0) and how it affects people's lives in return. I develop web-apps with ASP.NET 2.0/Python in my free time. For client-side stuff, I use jQuery for all that Javascript magic.

What I muse, I share on this blog. So enjoy reading my mind and in case you like what you read, kindly subscribe by either email or RSS.
